Wild Kingdom GWR (stands for green when ripe) is another open-pollinated tomato variety from Crafted Seed. It was selected from a Tom Wagner release of called Wild Kingdom.
However, Crafted Seed’s version of Wild Kingdom ripens to a complex and delicious green-when-ripe tomato.
Possessing closely spaced nodes, the plant is a rapid grower, able to set huge numbers of green striped, egg-shaped fruit over the course of a season. When slightly under-ripe, they have a very pleasant crunch and maintain their meatiness thru the ripe stage.
I will also do some limited releases from some other Wild Kingdom lines we have worked with as the variation is truly worth exploring for tomato geeks.
Stand out from the Green Zebra crowd while keeping it in the family. This one is a winner.
Wild Kingdom is a unique egg-shaped salad or snacking tomato that ripens with green stripes, green flesh, and a satisfying meaty crunch when you take a bite. With closely spaced nodes and vigorous growth, it is able to set huge numbers of delicious fruit over the course of a season.
You should grow this vigorous indeterminate green-when-ripe tomato.
The History of Wild Kingdom tomato:
“The history is contorted. I was in Iowa (2007) with Matt Barthel of SSE walking down the many rows of tomatoes that were being grown for seed increase…and there in about five rows in was a variety that looked like my GREEN SLEEVES….sure enough it was GREEN SAUSAGE Mark confirmed.
One of the plants looked like a hybrid and the rest were the typical compact determinate it should be. I told him that GREEN SAUSAGE was released out of Holland from seed I had sent there in 1996. I did not use that name but I guess it will stick for the time being with maybe an asterisk for historical reference.
I asked Matt to send me seed of the hybrid and the true type which he did later in the season. He was about to pull the hybrid out and I told him, NO, NO!
GREEN SAUSAGE is bred from my GREEN NAILS which I released back in 1983.
During the 2008 season I crossed quite a few pollen parents to this GREEN SAUSAGE collection….same with my F-5 version I called GREEN SLEEVES.
The cross I made to establish the F-1 seed was an F-2 plant from the cross of TEXAS WILD and my NEW GREEN ZEBRA. The F-2 was showing vivid stripes and for that reason I crossed it to GREEN SAUSAGE.
During the 2009 season, the hybrid was a vivid stripe with yellow flesh. Two years later the F-2 was grown out and a selection maintained as F-3 was call WILD KINGDOM.
The name WILD was used to denote connection to TEXAS WILD. KINGDOM was used to honor the show hosted by Marlin Perkins.
WILD KINGDOM will still segregate for some vital traits. As to the description…the 2011 seed was…
- 1 inch by 1 1/4 grape shape
- Yellow flesh with vivid stripes seen during the unripe phase
- Indeterminate…which comes solely from TEXAS WILD
- Narrow leafed which could still segregate for more or less narrowing
Since GREEN SLEEVES and the NEW GREEN ZEBRA were in the background as green flesh….yellow does show up in the filial generations yet to turn up as green flesh later on….” – Tom Wagner
